What happens in step 3?

Here’s what your two-year DDHEP programme includes.

First 14 weeks

Complete personal protection, driver and system training alongside knowledge-based learning at HQ and UWE.

Operational learning

Put your learning into practice with operational teams and experience the working patterns of frontline policing.

Investigative development

Work with investigative teams, build your casework skills and develop towards becoming a detective.

STEP 3 DETAIL

From learning to investigation

Build the knowledge, skills and experience you need to investigate crime.

Level 6 Diploma
  • Complete four modules over the two-year programme
  • Study legislation, powers, procedures and developing policing practice
  • Build the skills to conduct effective investigations

  • Work with operational and investigative teams
  • Apply your learning through practical experience and tutorship
  • Develop confidence in real policing environments

Investigators’ Exam
  • Complete the National Investigators’ Exam (NIE) during year two
  • The exam tests law and procedure relevant to trainee investigators
  • Finish the programme ready to manage cases with ongoing mentoring
